In 1947 Denmark got a new king - King Frederik 9. Greenland was
a little later than Denmark, so the first stamps with the portrait
of the new king were issued in 1950.
For the lower values it is with the kings portrait and for the
higher values it is showing a ship - "Gustav Holm" - which was
sailing in the Arctic Ocean.
The postal rates in Greenland is the same as in Denmark and because
of an increase of the rates in 1956 the rest of the high-value
stamps from 1938 were surcharged with a new value.
Commerative Stamps
Maybe because the stamp is showing a pretty woman, this stamp
is one of the most beautiful stamps ever issued in Greenland.
The picture of the stamp is showing the Mother of the Sea - an
old legend among the native people of Greenland.
