Line no. 5 was established in 1903 as a result of a need for an extra line near the center of Copenhagen and a line from Copenhagen to one of the suburbs - Brønshøj.

In 1917 line no. 5 was taken over the last horsedriven streetcar line, so it became the only streetcar line, which was running through the center of the old Copenhagen.

During the years it became the most important streetcar line in Copenhagen.

Line no. 5 should also be the last streetcar line in Denmark.

The very last day the line was running, special tickets were sold, which only could be used at the tram.

The last day for the line to be a streetcar line was April the 22nd 1972.
The nickname of the line was:
The Scoundrel wagon
because the line was passing through areas of Copenhagen, where people were easy to get into some fighting.
