Line no. 4 was originated from the Farimagsgade-line, which was established in 1883.

The line was electrified in 1901 and got numbered in 1902.

When the line was a major line, it had one of the longest lines from the center of Copenhagen and 13 Kilometers (8 miles) up north to Charlottenlund.

The part of the line from Svanemøllen to Charlottenlund was taken over by line no. 14 in 1908.

The last day for the line to be a streetcar line was April the 30th 1955.
The nickname of the line was:
The Little Suitcase
because the line was passing the main railway station, and many of the passengers had a suitcase.
