1819 Steam

In 1819 arrives the first Danish steamership "Caledonia" at Copenhagen. The steamership begins to traffic the route Copenhagen-Kiel. Before a trip from Copenhagen to the other Danish city, Kiel, by ship could last 2 or 3 days, the "Caledonia" did the trip in 1 day.

A only 14 year old boy from Odense has left his mother and arrives at Copenhagen in 1819. The boy wanted to be a ballet dancer at the Royal Theater.

His name was Hans Christian Andersen.

The biggest cities in the Danish kingdom are:

Copenhagen, Flensburg, Odense, Aarhus, Aalborg, and Charlotte Amalie.

The industrialitation in the Danish society is beginning. In 1829 is the Technical University opening with H. C. Ørsted as president.

In the duchies, Slesvig, Holsten, and Lauenburg the pro-German people are beginning to demand a constitution, which will make only the king and the Danish enemies common for the duchies and Denmark.

After a long time, where people were using the postal service between the Danish cities as a way to be transported without paying anything, a special wagon was invented in 1830. The box, where the mail were, was formed as a ball.

The first tomatoes is cultivated in 1834, and you can see the 1st florist shop in Copenhagen.

In December 1839 dies king Frederik and are followed by the crown prince Christian. The new king Christian 8. has a very different kind of personality than the kings of Denmark used to have. He is very cultured, have the feeling of what is going on in the society. He has winning manners and a dignified personality. By nature he is more artistic than political talented. The people of Denmark expects him to be the king, who will give them rights.

In August 1843 opens Tivoli at Copenhagen. Tivoli turned out to be one of the worlds most famous amusementparks.

The 1st railroad in the Danish Monarchy is opened in 1844 and goes from Kiel to Altona near Hamburg.

1845 India

The governor Peter Hansen at the Danish colony Trankebar is ordered to obtain negotiations with the British-Eastindian Company to sell the colony to the british. November the 7th 1845 the colony is sold for 1,125,000 Rigsdaler to the british. The amount is about 20,000,000 US-dollars in todays (1998) money.

The next railroad to be opened in Denmark is going from the capital Copenhagen to Roskilde, a distance of 31 Kilometers or 19 miles. The railwaystation is placed just besides Tivoli, so there are drilled holes in the fence, so people can see the trains. A trip from Copenhagen to Roskilde lasted 40 minutes.

The first brewery for brewing lager in Scandivia is opened in 1847. The brewery is named Carlsberg.

King Christian dies suddenly and is followed by his son, Frederik January 1848.
