1864 War with Germany

The 1st of February 1864 begins the new war with Germany and Austria. 57,000 soldiers are passing the Danish border. This time the Danes have an army, which is not having the newest weapons, an army which is not well-trained.

The 5th of Februar the Danish troops are leaving Dannevirke, a barrier against attackings from the south. In April Denmark has to give up Dybbøl, which is the last place in Jutland to defend.

Near Heligoland the Danish navy wins a battle between Denmark and Austria-Hungaria, which were allied with Germany. It was the only battle Denmark won in the war.

October the 30th 1864 Denmark is forced to sign a peace-agreement in Vienna. Denmark must give up the 3 duchies, and is now a very small country about 39,000 km² which is about 15,000 miles².

It is a national disaster.

After the war the people is in a kind of shock, but the country itself is not destroyed, everything in the society is functioning.
