The 20th Century is a century where Denmark is growing,
but also is getting smaller because of the many bridges
built.
The population is growing from about 3,000,000 to over
5,000,000 people. People are moving from the countryside
to the cities.

From being a neutral country, Denmark has joined the membership
of NATO and of the European Union.
1901 Democracy

For every election there were, the leftwings got more and more
seats in the parliament. At the election in 1901 the rightwings
got 8 seats against the leftwings 114 seats! The difficulties
for the conservative government were increasing.
King Christian the 9th choosed a moderate leftwing as the new
primeminister and in September Denmark had a government, which
was from the majority of the parliament.
Once again Denmark in 1902 is trying to sell its last colonies,
the Danish West Indies, to the United States of America, this
time for only $ 5,000,000 in gold, but Danish parliament didn't
agree to the deal.
February the 20th 1903 you can see the first number plate
on a car in Copenhagen.
In 1904 the Danes have their first vacumcleaners.

1905 Norway is getting a Danish born king
In 1814 Denmark had to say goodbye to
Norway, which became a part of Sweden. Just before Norway was
taken by the Swedes, they got a constitution, which said they
were independent. It took nearly 100 years for Norway to be a
independent country.
In 1905 Norway selected a Danish prince - a brother to the later
king Christian X - to be the new king of Norway. The prince changed
his name from Carl to Haakon the 7th and during the years he ruled
the country he became a national symbol for the Norwegians.
January the 29th 1906 king Christian dies and is followed by
his son Frederik.
1906 The First European Aeroplane
In 1907 Denmark got the
metric system and in 1909 the first submarine.
King Frederik dies suddenly in 1912 and is followed by his son
Christian.
The first diesel-powered ocean liner - "Selandia" - in the world
is build, 1912, by the Danish shipyard Burmeister & Wain in Copenhagen.
